Parliamentarians to resolve education policy issues

LAHORE – parliamentarians’ caucus has been set up on Thursday with the collaboration of UNICEF and Punjab education department to make efforts at policy making level for the promotion of education without any gender discrimination. “After Nepal, Pakistan is the second country where such a caucus has been established with UNICEF’s cooperation. According to UNICEF statistics only 20 students, out of a hundred enrolled in Pakistani schools, appear in Matric examination. After Nigeria and India, Pakistan is number three in the world with regard to non-school going children,” said speakers of a workshop held on gender issues.
The UNICEF education specialist in Pakistan Muqadasa Mehrin said taking parliamentarians into confidence with regard to gender issues in education and their awareness was necessary as these people could play a vital role in policy making. She stressed the need for creating public awareness on gender issues. She said gender issues were related with attitudes. She said parliamentarians especially women could play an important role in this regard.
She said educating a girl meant educating a generation. Punjab Assembly Standing Committee on Education Chairman Javed Chaudhry said the aim of development could not be achieved without education. Joint Education Advisor TM Qureshi said that education was the fundamental right of every person and it was the state’s responsibility to provide educational facilities to every citizen.
Tariq Saeed of UNICEF Lahore, Schools’ Additional Secretary Sheikh Izhar Ahmad, MPA Ijaz Ahmad Khan, MPA Muhammad Ijaz Shafi, MPA Aysha Javed, MPA Farhana Afzal, MPA Naseem Khawaja, MPA Anjam Safdar and others were also present at the workshop.
