LCWU holds debating competition

LAHORE – An Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University debate competition was held at the Lahore College and Women’s University. The competition was organised by the English debates society. The participant colleges included Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Government College University, Queen Mary College, Samanabad College and College of Home Economics.
The topic of the competition was “Sterility of emotions is the gift of technology”. Saleha Cheema from Fatima Jinnah Medical College stood first in the competition, Tehreem Ghani from Queen Mary College stood second and the third position award was shared by Halima Saadia from Government College University and Shezein Syed from Home Economics respectively.
The trophy was awarded to Fatima Jinnah Medical College. Prof Shama Khalid, Iffat and Khurshid Alam judged the competition. They shared their views on the topic and enriched the students. The chief guest, Bushra Mateen, along with faculty members and worthy guests Riffat Saleemi and Dr Hamala, praised the students’ contribution. While addressing the students, Dr Bushra Mateen explained how actually emotions were sterile by quoting several everyday examples of a Pakistani society.
The students who spoke in favour of the topic portrayed the negative consequences of technology but those who were against the topic clearly explained with examples how distances had decreased and people had come closer due to the advancements in technology, trying to present the case that emotions were uplifted instead of being eradicated.
The guests appreciated the efforts and the participation of the competitors and encouraged their enthusiasm to carry out such activities which helped in moral uplift of the students.
