Policeman among 5 killed in Peshawar, Bara violence

At least five people, including a policeman, were killed and another three were injured in separate incidents of violence in Peshawar and the adjoining Bara region of Khyber Agency on Friday.

Per details, Police Constable Shehzad Gul, guarding a church in Omeedabad area of Peshawar, was shot dead by unidentified men. Officials said the assailants opened indiscriminate fire on Gul who sustained several injuries. He was rushed to LadyReadingHospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Another police constable was also injured in the attack.

Terming it an act of terrorism, police authorities cordoned off the area. However, no arrest was made.

Separately, an official in Khyber Agency said unidentified armed men opened fire at a vehicle in Zowa area of Bara, killing two occupants of the vehicle on the spot and injuring another three.

The killed and injured tribesmen were said to be part of pro-government peace militia formed to fight militants in the area.

Meanwhile, security alert was declared in Peshawar and its surrounding areas for Friday prayers. Entry to all congested bazaars and sensitive areas was denied whereas contingents of police were deployed outside all big mosques. As a result, no untoward incident was reported while the police also succeeded in foiling two terrorist bids when they recovered and defused two high-intensity bombs.
