Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday said if power distribution system was handed over to provinces, the problem of electricity load shedding might be resolved.
He said this in his remarks during a hearing on load shedding.
The CJP said the decision on shifting the matter to provinces should be taken in a meeting of the Economic Coordination Council (ECC).
He questioned why provinces were not producing electricity after passage of the 18th amendment. NTDC should sell electricity to the provinces while it is the duty of the provinces to take decisions impacting industrial and domestic consumers.
He questioned why some companies were not generating electricity despite having licenses, and in why their permits were not cancelled. Without elimination of “kunda system” load shedding cannot be resolved, he added.
Attorney General Munir A Malik told the court that a meeting of all stakeholders was convened on June 12on orders of the court in this regard, which had positive consequences in minimising load shedding. He said that the government is making efforts to distribute the electricity on equality basis to all areas of the country.
The PEPCO managing director said there was lack of coordination in distribution companies, due to which the condition had worsened. He said if 80 percent of consumers paid their bills regularly, there would be no problem.
The CJP said those who paid bills and those who did not, could not be treated alike. There should be some difference between violators of law and those abiding by it, he said.
He said NTDC could provide electricity to provinces according to their requirements and it return provinces would pay it according to NFC award.

  1. Sir ! The un bundling of WAPDA's power wing be reversed. The power sector be handed over to professional power engineers under WAPDA. The power generation through oil by IPPs be stopped gradually. This will resolve all the issues relating to power sector.

  2. CJP needs to concentrate on his job instead of being a mafia god father. He has no business dictating policy. Its the govt's job. Somebody needs to start a fund so he can get his focus (eyes) straight. People with shifty eyes are not trust worthy.

    • @hamid. You are right. We really don't have a govt. in the first place but whatever we do have its still not the job of the CJP to be meddling in their affairs unless they are doing something against the law (and there is plenty of that going on). This clown of a CJP never uttered these word when it was ppp govt. Nawaz and gang are no better than Zardari and his crooks but these judges are showing an obvious bias. CJP has involved himself in every single matter in the country. Maybe somebody needs to slap him and remind him that his job is only to interpret law, not make laws.

  3. The problems associated with load shedding are many, the worst ones are the equipment and the grid needs massive repairs and replacements, additionally there is an acute shortage of fuel, both coal and gas. To resolve these problems will require large amounts of money and time, as much as 5 years. The bottom line is that the load shedding will continue during this time. The reason for this state of affairs is continued neglect and total disregard for the welfare of people by previous governments, including the governments lead by sherief brothers.

  4. I believe CJP needs to worry about the laws and people that break them, why is he worrying about load shedding??? does he not have millions, I mean millions of cases pending that require his attention??? He acts more like the President or the PM than a judge SMH,blah blah blah,he is always yapping about stuff he has no control over or he shouldn't interfere in.You are the Chief justice of Pakistan, start acting like it
