A Taliban office, to act as a bridge between militants and the Afghan government in facilitating talks between the two, will open today (Tuesday) in Doha.
A foreign television channel reported the news on Monday citing anonymous sources and giving no further details.
Meanwhile, a Taliban spokesman in Kabul appeared oblivious to the development and was unable to confirm or deny the news.
Talks have been underway since 2011 to open a Taliban office in Qatar.
In April 2013, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said the opening of a Taliban office in Doha could facilitate the peace process.
Karzai had previously opposed a Taliban office in Qatar over fears that his government would be pushed out of any future peace deal involving the Islamic extremists and the United States (US) in case a Taliban office was opened in Qatar.
But with the US-led NATO troops due to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, Karzai recently backed the proposed office in Doha.
