Spinners hold the key, says Qadir

LAHORE – Former spin greats have advised the Pakistan team to rely more on the slow bowlers in the remaining matches of the World Cup. Qadir, the master leg-spinner, also supported a bigger role for spinners but felt that no one should fall into the spin trap.
“Take a decision after looking at the pitch on a particular match day. Pitches in Sri Lanka tend to support the pace bowlers early on,” he said.
The former chief selector, however, agreed that the role of spinners would grow as the World Cup progressed.
“Teams with quality spinners will have a definite edge as the event goes on. That is why many teams are now giving the new ball to spinners and it makes sense,” he added. Danish Kaneria said the conditions in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the World Cup were such that it was not a bad idea to give the new ball to a spinner.
“It is becoming obvious as the tournament progresses that the spinners have a big role to play. Teams like South Africa, India, Zimbabwe and England have also experimented with spinners taking the new ball. And it was good to see Pakistan trying out the same strategy,” Kaneria said.
