Top seeds tumble in Edgbaston

Top seed Kirsten Flipkins was dumped out of the AEGON Classic in Edgbaston in the third round by Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova.

The 16th seed, the world number 47, claimed a 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 win over the Belgian in one hour and 24 minutes.

Third-seeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea survived a scare to progress as she saw off 13th-seeded Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia 6-1 1-6 6-1.

Sabine Lisicki, the fifth seed from Germany, was also taken to three sets by Croatia’s Mirjana Lucic-Baroni before coming through 7-5 2-6 6-4.

But her compatriot, the sixth-seeded Mona Barthel, crashed out, going down 6-3 6-2 to American Madison Keys.

French 12th seed Kristina Mladenovic also went out after losing 3-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia.

Other winners today included 15th seed Francesca Schiavone of Italy and American pair Alison Riske and Maria Sanchez.
