PU hosts Women’s gala

LAHORE – Punjab University (PU) Gender Studies department Chairperson Prof Dr Samar Fatima led a walk, in connection with International Women’s Day, at New Campus on Tuesday. The walk started from the department and concluded in front of the Vice Chancellor (VC) office where faculty members including Raana Malik and a large number of students were present. VC Dr Mujahid Kamran said women were unaware of their rights as their education had been neglected in the past, but now girls are becoming more aware and this year nearly 63 percent more girls got admitted in PU at open merit as compared to the previous year.
The VC said female students should step forward in every field. He said economic freedom was the real freedom and women should get education to be independent. He said it was regrettable that 51 percent population was not playing its due role in national development which would lead to social problems. He revealed that three PU female students were a part of the BigBang research team which was an honour for the varsity. He said female students were talented, had ability to excel and should utilize their skills to become professionals as well as good mothers.
Later the VC inaugurated Women’s Gala at the department and visited various stalls, of books, clothes, jewelry, skin care products
and other products, put up by students and NGOs.
