Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday directed the Punjab government to submit a report regarding measures to curtail and prevent measles on June 13, adding that Punjab’s chief (CM) minister and health minister would be held responsible if the disease swallowed further lives.
A single-member bench of the LHC, comprising Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan, conducted hearing of the case. Punjab Health Department director general (DG) told the court that special measures were being taken in order to overcome measles. Vaccination had brought down the number of casualties, he said.
The court expressed dissatisfaction over the report submitted by the DG, saying it had nothing to do with the ground reality and was more of a routine report.
In his remarks, Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan said the chief minister and health minister had assumed their offices and should now focus on solving the problem at hand.
The court said if anyone was found responsible of negligence, they would be sent behind bars.
“The government must do all it can in order to overcome the fatal disease which is targeting innocent children,” remarked Justice Khan.
The court, rejecting the health DG’s report, sought an explanation from Punjab government on June 13.
