The Bari Imam Complex construction could not be completed even in five years due to the concerned authorities mismanagement and funds shortage.
The project stands suspended while the concerned departments blame each other for the delay. Auqaf Department officials said that the allocated funds have been released while the Capital Development Authority (CDA) claims that the delay was due to decision making issueswithin the responsible governmental committee headed by the Senate chairman.
Work on the project commenced in 2008, and it was supposed to be completed in 2010. However, not even a single phase has been completed so far.
It was decided that PC-I of the project would require Rs 640 million of which Rs 320 million would be provided by the Auqaf Department, and Rs 320 million by the CDA. Later, the CDA failed to provide the funds due to its financial crunch.
When contacted, CDA Bari Imam Complex Director Tahir Mehmood said that the project’s phase one was in its last stages of completion. He said the government’s committee has not yet decided about the Verses of the Holy Quran to be written on the ceiling of the complex.
He added that the civic authority had decided not to provide funds for the project due to the financial crunch but had been providing free services in the construction work.
Mehmood said that Rs 200 million have been spent so far on the project, adding that it would be completed by the end of June if the committee made the required decisions on time.
