LAHORE – The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday dismissed a petition seeking early hearing of an already pending petition seeking disqualification of Punjab Assembly’s Unification Bloc leader Dr Tahir Ali Javed. LHC Chief Justice (CJ) Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry observed that the petition could not be fixed for an early hearing, as the court is facing a shortage of judges.
The main petition was filed by Zaheer Ahmed Naz, Allah Rakha Azhar, Nasir Mehmood and Muhammad Aslam through their counsel Bilal Minto. The counsel argued that Javed, who was elected as a member of the provincial assembly (MPA) on a Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) ticket in the 2008 general elections, was not fit to hold the office, as he had indulged in corruption, fraud and illegal medical practices in the US.
The petitioner’s counsel submitted that Javed, who practiced medicine in the US from 1998 to 2002, was repeatedly struck off from the medical registrars in three states including Nebraska, New York and South Carolina in September 2003, March 2004 and February 2006.
