RAC pays tribute to Baig’s legendary woodwork

The Rawalpindi Arts Council (RAC) on Tuesday organised a Wood Lay Exhibition of legendry artisan late Khalifa Irshad Baig’s work to pay tribute to his monumental achievements.

Punjab Assembly Memebr Raja Muhammad Hanif and RAC Resident Director Waqar Ahmed inaugurated the exhibition which would be open to the public till May 31.

Khalifa Irshad Baig’s widow and his son Khalifa Iqbal Baig were also present. 43 rare art pieces were displayed.

Baig was an internationally acclaimed artist with a unique flair for wood in all its shades and textures, and he struggled hard to keep his art alive. He was a rare craftsman who pioneered woodwork without the use of artificial colours.

Raja Muhammad Hanif said that Khalifa Irshad Baig would be remembered in history as a master artisan. He said that Baig had presented a portrait to Mian Shahbaz Sharif which was highly appreciated. He vowed to make efforts for financially assisting his bereaved widow and children.

Khalifa Irshad was an institution unto himself.  His wood cut work is relatively new but based on the old tradition of wood mosaic work,” remarked Waqar Ahmed. He said that Khalifa Irshad Baig was a national asset and his work would be remembered for ever.
