The incoming PML-N government is ready to try former president Pervez Musharraf over charges of treason, a party leader said on Tuesday.

The caretaker government that conducted the May 11 polls had refused to initiate proceedings against Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution for treason because of its limited mandate, but the PML-N had decided not to spare the former army chief who had overthrown the government of Nawaz Sharif in 1999.

“Yes we have decided to try Musharraf for treason in the Supreme Court. Musharraf had violated the constitution and he should face the music,” PML-N parliamentarian Tariq Azeem was quoted as saying.

Prime minister-elect Nawaz Sharif was very clear about trying Musharraf for violating the constitution, he said.

“Nawaz has made it clear that he has no personal issue with Musharraf but he should be tried for breaking the law and violating the constitution,” Azeem said.

The caretaker government recently informed the Supreme Court of its inability to conduct the trial of Musharraf.

It said it could not take any controversial step that would be irreversible for the incoming elected government.

The PML-N won the general election and Nawaz is set to become the PM for a record third term.

Musharraf is currently being held at his farmhouse in the outskirts of Islamabad, which has been declared a “sub-jail”.

He is facing charges over the 2007 assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto, killing of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Bugti in a 2006 military operation and the detention of dozens of judges during the 2007 emergency.

  1. Azeem Tariq shame on you, sharam nahe aati jis ke govt., ma tum ne wazarat hasil kee usi k khilaaf bol rahe ho? Doob Maro.

  2. This man should strip off the word Azeem and replace it with Scum.He should remmember the thrashing he got in Islamabad and for what reason.

  3. Good move. Nice decision. Better late than never. I had been waiting to hear about the plan of new govt regarding Musharraf. The selection of spokesperson is not a wise one

  4. So help me understand these "treason" changes. When Nawaz tries to deny COAS's plane from landing into Pakistani territory, that is not considered as treason but when the COAS topples Nawaz in retaliation then it becomes a treason case.

  5. Nawaz Sharif has just shown himself to be the small man with a smaller heart that I always knew him to be.

He is incapable of running Pakistan and lacks the courage to let the past go.

  6. General Musharraf remained in self-exile during PPP's government and returned to Pakistan only after the retirement of PPP government means he had a “DEAL” with PPP.

His supporters in the USA and UK governments have obtained the objective due to which they were supporting him and, as usual, they discard the toilet paper after use.

Musharraf has some 870,000 fans on Facebook, due to which he got the misconception that “he is the most popular person of Pakistan”, even more fans than Veena Malik!

The 21st century is different from the previous century and many Dictators (Chile, Iraq, Egypt, Libya) have seen their ultimate fate during & after Arab Spring.

The hidden lobby of Dictator’s cronies, having no moral courage to come forward officially, is highly constipated against the people's mandate & independent judiciary.

But the doctrine of necessity has been buried forever! He will rot in jail before Taliban could touch him.
