In a last-ditch effort to save his sinking party, which has almost been wiped out from the political arena, PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Thursday approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) requesting the electoral body to de-notify at least five newly-elected MPs for changing loyalties.

The PML-Q – which under the supervision of the establishment had emerged as a major political party in 2002 with 126 seats in the National Assembly – has almost been kicked out from political arena this time as it only managed to win two NA seats, one of which was won by Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

But, the PML-Q leadership thinks that their party can get few more seats if the five PML leaders, who, according to the PML-Q, under an agreement took part in the election as independent candidates but after winning, they betrayed the PML-Q and joined the PML-N.

The PML-Q leaders are of the view that it was agreed between the party leadership and the candidates that after winning, the MPs will join their party.

In his application, Shujaat requested the ECP to de-notify the newly-elected five MPs for changing their loyalty.

The five MPs that the PML-Q has been accusing of changing their loyaltiesn are Tahir Iqbal Chaudhry who won from NA-169 Vehari, Raza Hayat Hiraj who managed to defend his seat NA-156, Ashiq Hussain NA-180, Amir Anyat PP-50 and Amir Talal PP-261.

Sources in the ECP told Pakistan Today that Shujaat’s application has no worth. “The ECP cannot stop independents from joining a political party of their choice. Since five lawmakers in question didn’t contest elections from PML-Q platform so ECP cannot take action against them. However, commission will decide the matter after examining the content of the application,” said a senior official of ECP.
