The government of India on Thursday continued to remain cautious about its stance on Pakistan’s upcoming government, led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and said that India had had bitter experiences in the past.
“We have had some bitter experiences in the past and so it is necessary to be cautious while dealing with Pakistan,” Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told the journalists in the national capital.
He, however, welcomed a visit by Pakistan’s prime minister-elect Nawaz Sharif, saying that it would help bring in a new era of peace in the region.
“All disputes with Pakistan can be resolved through peaceful means,” the minister added.
Khurshid’s remarks came just days after Sharif pledged better ties with India after winning majority seats in May 11 general elections.
Sharif had said he was keen on resuming the India-Pakistan peace process that was interrupted in 1999 by then army chief Pervez Musharraf who ousted his government in a military coup.
