Senior leadership of the PPP has said issuance of a tax ordinance by the caretaker government is unconstitutional and the PPP will oppose the ordinance tooth and nail in the coming sessions of the Senate and the National Assembly.

“The caretaker government has no authority to restructure one of the ministries devolved to the provinces because it is the violation of the 18th Amendment,” PPP leader Raza Rabbani told reporters after the Senate session on Thursday.

He hoped that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would support the PPP’s stance on the matter because the PML-N supported the PPP during the 18th Amendment, adding that the issuance of a tax ordinance was illegal and unconstitutional.

“The caretaker government has no authority to decide tax-related matters and such steps will not only violate eth 18th Amendment but will breach the caretakers’ mandate too, which will not be acceptable at any cost,” Rabbani added.

The interim government was all set to issue an ordinance regarding tax under which the general sales tax (GST) will be increased so that budget deficit could be met.
