Jerzy Janowicz ripped off his shirt in celebration seconds after clinching a famous win over Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the ATP Rome Masters.
The Polish underdog came through his second round clash against the eighth seed in straight sets, 6-4 7-6 (7-5) on a cloudy day at the Foro Italico.
Janowicz, 22, reached the Paris Masters final as a qualifier last year, beating Andy Murray and Janko Tipsarevic along the way.
But the 24th-ranked player, who has gone from playing a tournament in Barnstaple to the Italian capital in the space of 12 months, played with passion and flare to defeat the two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist.
After securing a famous win with a forehand passing shot up the line on match point, Janowicz celebrated by ripping his shirt apart.
“I was really happy especially because I didn’t get off to a good start to the season and I was sick,” Janowicz told he ATP official website.
“So this was really important for me.”
Defending champion Rafael Nadal opened his campaign by knocking out home hope Fabio Fognini 6-1 6-3 in 61 minutes.
The left-hander won 74 per cent of his service points and broke the No 25-ranked Fognini five times.
Nadal will next play Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis who defeated Viktor Troicki of Serbia, 6-1 6-1 in 71 minutes.
Meanwhile, Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov got a free trip into the third round as Madrid finalist and 15th seed Stanislas Wawrinka quit before their meeting with a thigh injury which also bothered him last week.
Another seed also made his exit from the clay court event as Japan’s 16th seed Kei Nishikori went tumbling out 6-4 6-1 to Jeremy Chardy, while another Frenchman, Gilles Simon also came through in straight sets against Mikhail Youzhny from Russia.
David Ferrer came through a tough all-Spanish clash, edging Fernando Verdasco 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 27 minutes.
The 31-year-old now meets on German Philipp Kohlschreiber who broke serve five times as he dismissed Spain’s Albert Ramos 6-4, 6-1 in 77 minutes.
