Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate from NA-235 Shazia Marri on Thursday demanded re-polling in Sanghar over what she called an “unfair electoral process.”
In a press conference at Karachi Press Club Marri, flanked by PPP’s former senator Taj Haider and senior party leader ND Khan, she spoke against the alleged unfair treatment meted out to Sanghar’s PPP candidates. Even though PPP managed to win seats from Sindh, Marri said that there were “irregularities” in certain polling stations. First, she explained that Acchra Thar was officially recorded as having a hundred per cent voter turn out which, according to her, was not possible.
Marri added that she had been corresponding with the Election Commission Pakistan officials and pointed out 26 suspect polling stations, but did not hear back. “On May 11, we witnessed exactly what we had feared as incidents of gun firing scared the voters away,” she said. She expressed disappointment over the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) over a call-for strike in Sindh against alleged vote-rigging. Marri, who lost to PML-F’s Pir Sadruddin Shah Rashdi in Sanghar, claimed that she was “fired upon by PML-F workers outside a polling station.”
She further demanded that the complaints cited by her should be addressed under law. Former PPP senator Taj Haider attributed the rigging to “certain elements” working against the PPP since the 70s. Mr Haider demanded that Sindh Chief Election Commissioner Abdul Sattar Eisani should start hearing tribunals on a daily basis. He added that any voter, judge, or bureaucrat involved in rigging should be exposed. Professor N D Khan also demanded that the ECP should listen to the rising number of applications against the re-polling in certain sectors before it is too late.
