The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Sunday lauded the Election Commission of Pakistan for successfully conducting free, fair and transparent elections without any delay.

HRCP had observed the pre election process for the last few months and Election Day itself in most parts of the country.

The commission scrupulously observed the electoral process in 57 National Assembly constituencies, of which 8 were in Balochistan, 13 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 19 in Punjab and 17 in Sindh.

HRCP acknowledged the ECP’s efforts to prepare computerized electoral rolls but pointed out the system’s shortcomings: the first draft rolls were so flawed that preparing corrected lists had to be extended till poll schedule’s announcement.

The HRCP recommended an earnest initiative to revamp the ECP, redefine its priorities, reduce bureaucratic intervention in politics and grant due representation to women.
