Providing conducive and peaceful environment for the holding of general elections is the top priority of the Pakistan Army and other personnel at the moment, Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani said on Wednesday.

Addressing a meeting of the core commanders at the military headquarters, the COAS asked all stakeholders to focus on ensuring timely elections. He said their aim should be to hold peaceful elections throughout the country and for this all the stakeholders should give priority to mutual coordination.

Later, apprising reporters about the meeting, ISPR DG Major Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa said 300,000 security forces personnel will be deputed in Punjab.

“Of the 300,000, 268,000 will be police and Rangers personnel and 32,000 will be army personnel,” he added.

The ISPR DG said army officials had also held meetings with stakeholders in Sindh and Balochistan. “No one should have any doubt about holding of the elections,” he added.

  1. It is the duty of Pakistan army to ensure internal/external security and free/fair elections. Anyone expecting more from Pakistan army is not only disloyal but also indulging in conspiracy against state.

  2. Terrorist organizations like the TTP are trying everything in their power to derail these upcoming elections. The last few weeks alone serve as a testament to their atrocities against the political parties and candidates. It is obvious that this is part of their master plan to send the region into chaos and frenzy. We encourage the people of the region to stand united and support our forces in countering the threat posed by these terrorists. We hope to combine our strength and continue our partnership against our common enemies. We restate what Patrick Ventrell, Department of State Acting Deputy Spokesperson, said recently: “We condemn the violence surrounding the elections. We do continue to urge Pakistanis to get out and vote and express their free will so that democracy can prevail and the people’s voice can be heard. And so we’re concerned about the violence but we urge the electoral process to continue.”
