According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 25% Pakistanis think there is a ‘very high threat’ of riots/breakdown of law and order in their constituency on Election Day, media reported on Saturday.
A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “In your opinion, in your constituency where you vote, is there a threat of riots on Election Day?” Responding to this, 25% said ‘very high threat’, 32% said ‘somewhat of a threat’ and 42% said ‘no threat at all.’ However, 1% did not give a response.
A comparison between localities shows that more urban respondents believe there is a ‘very high threat’ (30%) compared to rural respondents (22%).
Comparing between provinces shows that respondents in Baluchistan are most worried about riots on Election Day (53%), followed by KPK (34%), Sindh (27%) and Punjab (20%).
The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2641 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during April 15, 2013 – April 21, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2 to 3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
