Massive protests were staged in Bhikhiwind, native village of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian death row prisoner who died at Lahore’s JinnahHospital late on Wednesday night after being severely injured by other inmates.

As the news of Sarabjit’s death spread, people of Bhikhiwind came out of their houses and gathered in market places to protest against Pakistan. Shopkeepers closed their establishments.

Angry residents of Bhikhiwind staged protests against Pakistan for the brutal attack on Sarabjit Singh in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail. They were also resentful of the Indian government for not responding in time, and its failure to generate pressure on the Pakistan government for sending Sarabjit Singh to India for better treatment.

While mourning the death, his friend Manjinder Singh demanded the Indian government try to bring back Sarabjit’s body to India as soon as possible. He said, “People of Bhikhiwind are demanding that the government declare Sarabjit Singh a martyr.”
