Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner on death row, was attacked and seriously injured by his fellow prisoners at Kot Lakhpat Jail on Friday.
“Sarabjit was attacked by fellow death row convicts Muddasar and Amir Aftab during their hour-long break. The two inmates attacked the Indian prisoner with bricks and blades, leaving him in a serious condition with critical head injuries,” a jail official, seeking anonymity told Pakistan Today.
He said that Sarabjit was immediately rushed to the Jinnah Hospital where doctors put him on a ventilator. “He (Sarabjit) is in a coma at the moment,” Dr Zafar Iqbal, head of the Neuro Surgery Department at the hospital told Pakistan Today on the phone. He said the doctors are mulling carrying out an operation on Sarabjit to save his life.
Jail sources said that the prime suspect in the attack, Amir Aftab, had quarreled with Sarabjit a few days ago but the jail authorities did not bother to take notice of the incident. The reason for the altercation could not immediately be ascertained.
Taking notice of the incident, the Punjab Inspector General of Prisons has suspended the assistant superintendent and warden of Kot Lakhpat Jail for negligence in duty while the Punjab Home Department has ordered an enquiry into the incident. Deputy Superintendent Prisons Malik Mubashir has been tasked with the investigation.
A source at the hospital told Pakistan Today that tight security measures had been enforced at the ward where Sarabjit is being treated. “Police commandos and intelligence personnel have been deployed in the ward and unauthorised persons have been barred from entering the facility,” he said.
PAKISTAN GIVES INDIA CONSULAR ACCESS:
The Foreign Affairs Ministry was quick to respond to a request by the Indian External Affairs Ministry for consular access to Sarabjit.
“We have a track record of responding to humanitarian situations. The Indian government has been granted immediate access to the injured convict,” said a Foreign Office spokesman.
Earlier, Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told the Press Trust of India (PTI) that two officers had been sent to Lahore for consular access to Sarabjit.
Sarabjit’s lawyer Owais Sheikh said the incident would have “very very serious consequences”.
Last year in September, Sarabjit wrote a letter to his sister and daughters alleging that the authorities at Kot Lakhpat jail were slow-poisoning and mentally torturing him. Sarabjit had accused the jail officials of “conspiring to drive him insane” and ridiculing him when he asked them for painkillers.
According to the prosecution, Sarabjit had illegally crossed into Pakistan from Kasur on August 29, 1990.
He was arrested on charges of conducting four bomb blasts in Faisalabad, Multan and Lahore. He is named Manjeet Singh in the FIR. He was sentenced to death. His counsel claimed it was a case of mistaken identity.

  1. He deserved the right treatment, despite the sentence,he is living on tax payers money with all the comforts.when india can hang afzal guru ,why cant we hang this terrorists a RAW agent proven for his guilt.A Criminal and a terror rogue must be put to end, enough of soft glove approach.

  2. Do not put your small brain on display here.
He did not kill anyone. The so called conviction of the Kangaroo court was based on his confessional statement which was extracted during his police custody. There are no evidence, no video footage, no witness who saw him carrying the bomb and placing it there…. just a story was made to satisfy thirst of Pakistanis for blood.
Afzal Guru was not a pakistani by law. So do not compare two cases.
If He was placing bombs at that time who is placing bombs now that are killing hundreds every month ???????

    • Kangroo courst????? If Indian courts convict a Pakistani thats justice but if Pakistan convicts an Indian thats kangroo courts. He was convicted and found guilty for the murders of innocent Pakistani citizens. Not too long ago an, Indian spy, was released from prison on account being innocent. The moment he landed in India he confessed to being a spy and berated the Indian government for leaving him high and dry. He was guilty and so is this guy.

  3. My request to entire population of Pakistan to please look this case on human ground…his family is waiting from last 18 years… one of his daughters has not seen him single a time in her life.

    • Our request with Indian peace loving citizens are to be broadminded and also see how badly India is treating Pakistan CLAP IS NOT DONE WITH SINGLE HAND.WHAT YOUR GOVERNMENT IS DOING WITH INNOCENT KASHMIRIS IN INDIAN OCCUPIED KASHMIR.DID YOU PEOPLE THINK ABOUT THEIR SUFFERINGS BRUTIALLY BY INDIAN OCCUPIED ARMY? SEE,THINK,DECIDE AND BE POSITIVE TOWARDS PAKISTAN.

      • it just not the case of this innocent sarbjeet singh there are many more sarabjeet's are there and what the pakistan government had done with the sarbjeet , do you feel is that correct ? think once that his family has suffered a lot and what about all these brutalities that he had suffered .. i am not blaming the pakistan but please see the medical report of sarbjeet …..

        always peace and loving indians

  4. This is surely some kind of paln event to create new conflict between two rivals before election. All know well that who can dare to allow such stupid acts for creating vacuum of insecurity around this region.

  5. I think Pakistan is proving there is no rule of law in pakistan.anybody can be killed any time. Why have courts if they want to just kill prisoners like this. They killed one Indian only a few months backs..So pakistan should come out open & start killing all indian prisoners immediately & show their democratic & human right credentials.

    • What happened is bad but before you start verbally abusing Pakistan please recall the fate of Pakistani prisoner who was murderd in a Jail in India and his corpse handed over to us in a bori. Scan the internet for the old news.

  6. pakistani leadership has knack for getting in trouble. A similar pakistani criminal was hanged by Indian government and the case was closed. Just do not know what made them wait and create a problem for themselves. Following suite, he should have been hanged and the case should have been closed.
Today a terrorist will have all the global sympathies and people have forgotten 14 Pakistanis killed by him.
