Business activities, education institutions and transport remained shut across various cities of Sindh for the second consecutive day on Friday on a call given by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) against continued targeting of its candidates and offices in Karachi.
An explosive-laden motorcycle blew up near an MQM election office in North Nazimabad’s Nusrat Bhutto Colony on Thursday night, killing at least six people and injuring 13 others.
Subsequently, the MQM again announced a day of mourning across Sindh on Friday as banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack.
It was the second such attack on MQM within a few hours. On Tuesday, four people were killed and over a dozen injured when a blast ripped through MQM’s election office at People’s Chowrangi in North Nazimabad area.
In the wake of the strike call made by the MQM coordination committee, all educational institutions, petrol pumps and business outlets remained closed, and roads wore a deserted look on Friday.
No major incident of violence was reported during the strike.
Attendance in government offices also remained thin as employees could not get to work because of non-availability of public transport.
All examination papers scheduled for today were postponed as the Private School Association announced closure of education institutions in the wake of uncertain law and order.
A similar situation was reported from elsewhere in Sindh, with all large and small markets remaining shut amid thin traffic on roads in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Nawabshah and other towns of Sindh following MQM’s call for mourning.
MQM chief Altaf Hussain advised the masses to exercise all possible caution to avert any untoward incident of terrorism.
In a statement issued from London, Altaf said the people should immediately inform police about suspicious vehicles, individuals or things and avoid sitting on roads and outside their houses in their localities to save themselves from any potential threat of terrorism.
The MQM said terrorists were roaming scot-free across the city and the state institutions had failed to provide security and protection to the people.
What a joke, what when MQM and other Party goonies kill innocent people, do they shut down businesses? It is a loss to the merchants and businesses. The city needs law and order and less curruptoin. Karachi the city of joy and pride is now a city of death and crime. The teams, lawyers, police, military, merchants, government officals etc… are corrupt and dishonest to the nation, city and themselves. In 64 years water, electricity, sui gas is a luxury for a common man in Pakistan.
