Patience is running out with Pakistan: Karzai

Afghan President Hamid Karzai left on Tuesday for talks in Brussels with top US and Pakistani officials aimed at reviving faltering efforts to bring peace to his country.

Karzai’s office says patience is running out with Pakistan, seen by the West as a key player in brokering peace with Taliban insurgents who have been battling the Kabul government and US-led foreign forces since 2001.

US Secretary of State John Kerry will host Wednesday’s talks between Karzai and Pakistan’s army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, along with other senior officials on both sides.

Kerry said Monday the aim was to “try to talk about how we can advance this process in the simplest, most cooperative, most cogent way” to satisfy Pakistan’s and Afghanistan’s interests and end up with “a stable and peaceful Afghanistan”.

Relations between Islamabad and Kabul, strained for years, appeared to make headway earlier in the year but have once again nosedived. The Taliban still refuse in public to negotiate with Karzai’s government.

“Pakistan has not taken practical measures towards the Afghan peace process so far. Afghans are running out of patience,” Karzai’s spokesman Aimal Faizi said Monday.

Afghanistan says Pakistan, which backed the 1996-2001 Taliban regime, continues to support the insurgents to counter the influence of arch-rival India.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said Monday it “remains committed to continue its positive and constructive role towards a durable peace in Afghanistan”.

Relations had improved between the countries, building up to a three-way summit hosted by Britain in February to try to find an end to the war.

But Faizi last month said Pakistan had now abandoned the peace process and imposed “impossible” preconditions on any further discussions.

Pakistan has released at least 26 Afghan Taliban prisoners in recent months – a move that Kabul welcomed in the hope that they could help persuade the Taliban to enter into peace talks.

But there is little evidence that the prisoners have done so and Kabul is now increasingly impatient that other detainees, including former Afghan Taliban deputy leader Abdul Ghani Baradar, have not been handed over.

    • Well said!!! The Chief Gardener of the Presidential Palace in Kabul (Karzai) should stop yapping like a demented dog and actual earn the billions the US has paid him oops! He has earned it! Look at the great job he has done in running Afghanistan into the ground.
Only a true idiot could make the Taliban look good.

    • They are our pukhton brothers. They will stay for what ever time they would like. U need to pack up and go to india or become part of india.

        • Typical punjabi/Paki establishment mentality. I existed in my area 6000 years ago. I guess its time for you to pack up. Pukhtons need to wake up to the occupiers and save ourselves from Paki policy of Deep State.

          • Really? Wow so thats why foreign people came and occupied your land. You stood slience in afghanistan :). Yes I am punjabi/Paki, we all are except you. It hurts right? I still insist pack up

      • 100% Agree, no difference between Bangladesh and Afghanis, they will stab us anytime. War is almost over, who won we dont care. Take your refugees and please stay in your beloved afghanistan. We had enough of you guys

        • Afghanis now have legitimate claim on Pakistani land, women and culture as any other Paki. Don't even think of sending these people back.

  2. Mr Karzai must see under his own cot before his office issues such statement. What Pakistan has not done for these people? All what we are in today is because of these people and our stupid and non-sense last two regimes that we are listening such remarks from the office of a man who has no character of his own and speaks others' words.

  3. Karzai is an ungrateful human being. After seven years of Pkistan's hospitality, then Pakistan's continued support to his most corrupt and inept Government, he bites the hand that feeds him! Pakistan should tell him to go take a hike and tell the Americans to install a leader in Afghanistan who is sensible and can bring the transition through successfully. This man is bad news.

  4. Afgan refugees have done a lot for Pakistan and now they have equal rights as any other Paki. Why people are threatning to send these people back.
