The hearing in the treason case against former dictator Pervaiz Musharraf is scheduled for Monday at the Supreme Court (SC).

A reconstituted three-judge bench, headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja will be hearing the case. The government is expected to tell the SC whether it wants to initiate proceedings against the former military ruler under Article 6 of the Constitution or not.

The former general is currently ‘detained’ at his farmhouse at Chak Shehzad which was declared a sub-jail last week.

Legal analysts believe that this case will prevent aspiring military dictators to overthrow democratic governments and suspend the Constitution. However, some politicians are cautioning that the trial may open a Pandora’s box.

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), made a statement on Sunday suggesting that the trial should be avoided at this critical juncture with elections coming up. He warned that any attempt to humiliate either an individual or an institution would be counterproductive and dangerous.

Shujaat was an ally of the former president while he ruled the country unconstitutionally for nine years (1999-2008).
