The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Saturday announced its candidates for National Assembly and provincial assemblies’ seats throughout the country.

The names were announced by MQM chief Altaf Hussain in a telephonic address, with screens put up at the venue displaying the names, pictures and constituencies of the candidates.

Names of 674 candidates were announced. Of these 221 candidates will contest for national assembly seats and 453 candidates will compete for the provincial assembly. As many as 22 women were also named as candidates for general seats.

Karachi accounts for half of all seats MQM is contesting in Sindh with 20 candidates fighting for national assembly seats and 42 candidates contesting provincial assembly seats in the megalopolis.

However, Punjab overshadows other regions for MQM where they will field candidates contesting on 132 national assembly seats 256 provincial assembly seats.

Altaf Hussain claimed that the MQM is representative of the common people and that it does not feature turncoats.

The MQM chief also voiced his concerns about the security situation, saying their party workers and supporters were being targeted every day, and asked why the caretaker government is not taking notice of these killings.
