Pakistan pleads for peace, stability in Afghanistan: FO

Pakistan has urged all stakeholders, including the United States, concerned to devote their energies towards making Afghanistan peaceful‚ progressive‚ prosperous and a stable country in the post-withdrawal period.

Briefing reporters in Islamabad on Friday‚ Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said Pakistan was in contact with all concerned in this regard and was monitoring the evolving situation.

Asked to comment on allegations by Kabul about Pakistan’s involvement in terrorist activities inside Afghanistan‚ the spokesman said Pakistan did not believe in allegations and counter allegations.

“We are convinced that peace‚ stability and reconciliation in Afghanistan is in Pakistan’s own interest. Pakistan will facilitate peace process in Afghanistan in every possible manner.”

To another question, Chaudhry said there were some issues between the two countries, including that of border management, adding that the military authorities of the two countries met to resolve it.

To yet another question‚ he said Pakistan-US relationship was on a positive trajectory and “we are collaborating in various fields”.

The FO spokesman said composite dialogue between Pakistan and India was continuing. “Two rounds have been completed and the third one is underway.”

He hoped that the dates for talks on various segments of the composite dialogue would be sorted out soon.

To a question, Chaudhry said no country or a foreign mission had contacted or approached the Foreign Ministry on the issue of General (r) Pervez Musharraf.

The FO spokesman said the EU election observers were already in Pakistan and were being briefed, adding that the National Democratic Institute had also indicated its interest in observing the elections.
