The Islamabad High Court on Friday declared the appointment of managing director of Pakistan Television, Yousaf Beg Mirza, illegal.

Director Engineering Mustafa Kamal would be the acting MD of the channel until a new MD is appointed.

A single bench of Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui passed the order while hearing a plea filed by Ahsraf Azeem, a former PTV MD, against the appointment of Yousaf Beg Mirza.

The judge in its order observed that competitive procedure for selection of Yousaf Beg Mirza as the MD was not adopted.

During the course of hearing, Naeem Bokhari, counsel for Mirza, apprised the bench that so far no PTV MD had been appointed through competitive selection procedure.

He requested the bench to pass an order in the case after May 11 due to appropriate coverage of the elections.

Bukhari contended that his client had been working on high salary in two private television channels on the same post.

To this, Justice Siddiqui questioned that whether the competitive procedure for selection of MD was adopted in the appointment of Mirza.

“If he is such a talented person, why does he shy away from going through a competitive procedure for getting the top slot in PTV,” he asked.

Justice Siddiqui remarked that the selection of MD should be made on merit by advertising the post of a state-owned organisation.

  1. All appointments should be on Merritt. There should be no political interference in any department. A good decision by SC.
