Former president Pervez Musharraf has said he had full confidence in the judiciary and hoped his right to contest polls would not be taken away from him.

In an exclusive chat with BBC, Musharraf said he hoped justice would be administered to him by the courts.

“If I don’t hope for dispensation of justice from the courts, who will I pin this hope on,” he added.

He said the decisions taken by him for holding the constitution in abeyance, proclamation of emergency and removal of judges were correct and compatible with then environment.

“There was such atmosphere prevailing over then wherein I was striving to put in place a democratic process and stable democratic order in the country. Certain actions were taken at that time. This is all history and these will be presented before the court,” he underlined.

The former president said, “There are multiple fronts where I will have to fight. Contesting polls is right of everyone and it is my right too.”

To a question on rejection of nomination papers from Islamabad and Karachi, he said per Articles 62 and 63, no there was no matter for his papers to have been rejected.

He said he would decide to sit in parliament after assessing the situation in the event of winning the election.

“I will not want to sit on some unimportant position. If some position emerges where I may play some vital role, I will think about it after elections,” he said.

To a question that court had barred him from leaving the country and if it was acceptable to him, Musharraf said “I have come here to contest elections and stay here. Therefore, I have no objection over it if any such thing has been done.”

Commenting on his appearance in a court in Karachi, Musharraf said he had earlier dubbed it insulting.

“That was initial reaction. Then I thought about it and I realised my mistake. I have been saying often that all are equal in the eyes of law and this also applies to me. Secondly I also realised that I had appeared before an institution and not an individual.”

  1. This is a lesson to all future coup leaders. Eliminate ALL your enemies at the first oppurtunity. Pakistan needs a fresh breed of politicians anyway.

  2. Yeah "Right" General sb. U denied media their rights, judiciary their rights and politicians their rights, And now you seek " rights" for yourself? How cool is that? "right?"
