Many top guns from Lahore might be shown the door as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership is all set to announce its final line-up for the city within the next 24 hours, Pakistan Today has learnt.
A party source told Pakistan Today that the list of candidates awarded party tickets from Lahore will be full of surprises. Some former ministers and local MPAs with a stronghold over the city’s politics from PML-N might not make it to the list, the source said.
The PML-N has already come under fire from within and outside the party for delaying the award of tickets. Even independent observers are surprised at the hold-up in the final announcement of candidates from Punjab.
Sources said the party delayed the final announcement to wait for nomination papers’ scrutiny results of candidates that could have been disqualified. “Any candidate with a PML-N ticket getting disqualified would be embarrassing for the party. We are just avoiding the tag of disqualification,” a source said.
Sources privy to the party’s selection process said this time round many big guns running the show in Lahore might be sidelined in the final line-up. They said there was a big question mark on the fate of former education minister Zaeem Qadri.
A party insider claimed that so far Qadri’s name had not been included in the final list.
Similarly, the fate of Salman Rafique (brother of Saad Rafique), Pervaiz Malik and Khawaja Imran also hangs in the balance, they added.
Sources said the initially formulated list had been revised under direct supervision of party chief Nawaz Sharif.
Nawaz reconstituted the board after some of his loyalists failed to find a place in the initial list, a party leader claimed.
Meanwhile, the PML-N is keeping the list under wraps to pre-empt any backlash from within the party.
A party insider, on a lighter note remarked, “The list is in Shahbaz Sharif’s briefcase which he carries with him all the time”.

1, Mega Rich – must have loads of money, if stolen, better chances.
2, A fake degree holder – education brings malpractices into the party
3, Incompetent at everything, even at lying
4, Stealthness of a thief – test will be given to validate this
5, Criminal record, obviously, one without this requirement would not be considerd, as it's the benchmark in the party.
