Former Proteas opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs has joined the Titans franchise for the Ram Slam T20 Challenge playoffs.

The Titans announced on Friday that Gibbs had replaced former New Zealand international Scott Styris in their T20 squad for the last week of the domestic season.

“Gibbs comes in for Scott Styris. We have a big game coming up and I am positive his experience will come in handy,” said Titans coach Matthew Maynard.

Gibbs is best known for his knock of 175 in South Africa’s record ODI run chase against Australia at the Wanderers in March 2007, and for becoming the first ODI player to score six sixes in an over against the Netherlands during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

A veteran of 162 T20 matches, Gibbs last played for South Africa at the 2010 World T20 tournament in the West Indies.

A specialist T20 player for the last two seasons, he helped the Perth Scorchers reach Australia’s Big Bash League domestic final in January.

Gibbs would link up with the Titans, the franchise confirmed, at their training session in Centurion on Saturday morning.

The Titans, who finished third on the log, face the Warriors in the qualifying playoff in East London on Wednesday for a place in the T20 Challenge final, which will be hosted by the Highveld Lions at the Wanderers next weekend.
