Justice (r) Zahid Qurban Ali Alvi was sworn in as caretaker chief minister (CM) of Sindh on Thursday.
In a ceremony held at Governor House, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad administrated the oath.
Former Sindh CM Syed Qaim Ali Shah and other leaders from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) also participated in the ceremony.
The caretaker cabinet of the province is likely to comprise between 10 to 12 ministers.
Justice Alvi belongs to Karachi and was nominated as judge of the Sindh High Court on May 5, 1988.
Alvi also took oath under former army chief Pervez Musharrf’s first Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) in 2000 as judge of the Sindh High Court.
In addition, Alvi was appointed tribunal chief to probe the breach in Indus River at Guddu Barrage during the 2010 floods. In its findings, Alvi’s tribunal declared the breach was natural, which was a sigh of relief for the PPP government.
Alvi also headed the Baldia Factory fire probe following the incident that burnt over 250 people alive. Alvi’s tribunal declared that the fire occurred due to short-circuiting.
