Rawalpindi WASA celebrated World Water Day on Thursday to highlight the importance of clean drinking water.
WASA RDA DG Naseer Ahmad said that there was a scarcity of water in Pakistan and in other countries of the world.
“It is the need of the hour to augment new water sources to overcome the upcoming shortage of water in Pakistan, especially in the Potohar region,” he said.
He stresses that the construction of Chirah and Daducha Dams in the Potohar region should be initiated immediately.
The director general said that WASA Rawalpindi was planning on initiating major projects of water augmentation to overcome the shortage of water in Rawalpindi city.
“The projects which are under construction include Indus River Water Project of 200 MGD and Chirah Dam of 14 MGD. Once these projects are complete, we will have clean drinking water for the twin cities,” he said.
On the occasion WASA MD Raja Shaukat Mahmood said that WASA Rawalpindi was striving hard to provide clean drinking water to the citizens and all possible efforts were being made in this regard.
He appealed to consumers that the situation demanded conservation of water and they could play a pivotal role to conserve and minimise the wastage of water.
On behalf of WASA, he requested to the general public to cooperate for the conservation and the economical use of water. “WASA is working day and night to ensure contamination-free provision of water to citizens and all purposeful steps are being taken in this regard,” he said.
The seminar was attended by the staff of WASA, by RDA, PHA, civil society and by media personnel.
The event was concluded with a water awareness walk at Murree Road.
