Former prime minister and PPP Senior Vice Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani has welcomed President Asif Ali Zardari’s announcement regarding the holding of elections on May 11.

Gilani on Thursday said the announcement had eliminated all doubts about the forthcoming elections in Pakistan, adding that it had also dashed the hopes and designs of anti-democratic elements who were hoping to enter the corridors of power through manipulation, deceit or force.

He said the completion of the constitutional term of parliament was a singular shining example of Pakistani politics because for the first time the democratic transition would take place as a result of free, fair and transparent elections on May 11.

Gilnai said the PPP and its leadership had unflinching commitment to the democratic process in the country, adding that the presidential announcement was the physical manifestation of the same commitment.

He said the PPP and its workers faced the worst type of dictatorship but it could not weaken their resolve for democracy and the empowerment of the people.

Gilani said no amount of torture could sever ideological affiliation of the PPP with the people of Pakistan and its continued struggle for the restoration of their fundamental rights.
