Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has said that the completion of five-year constitutional tenure by duly elected parliament was a major achievement of the democratic system.

Talking to reporters in Lahore after a high-level party meeting on Wednesday‚ the PML-N chief said it was for the first time in the country’s history that a government elected by the people was departing, while a new one would come into power through the same democratic process.

Nawaz said the PML-N spent five years in opposition with patience for strengthening democracy in the country, adding that the PML-N as opposition showed the way of prosperity and development to the government.

“We showed commitment to solve the country’s problems with cooperation with the government.”

He said all problems and challenges currently being faced by the country were the product of dictatorships.

Nawaz said martial law was no way to resolve the problems, but it was democracy that provided ultimate solution to the problems of the people and the country.

He said in the past‚ conspiracies were hatched against democracy.

Nawaz hoped that the issue of nominating caretaker prime minister would be resolved through constitutional and democratic process.

The PML-N chief said he would not tolerate any attempt to rig the elections and would take all measures to ensure free and fair elections.

Nawaz said the MQM parted ways with the government only a few days before the end of the government’s term.

He said the PML-N received thousands of applications for awarding of tickets for the next general elections and that a convention would be held in Lahore on March 22 for aspirants of party tickets.

The PML-N chief also welcomed Raheela Magsi into the party.

“Bargaining was made in dissolution of Sindh and Balochistan assemblies,” he said, adding that bargain was against the spirit of the 20th Constitutional Amendment.
