Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Tuesday said two million dollars from the national exchequer were spent on Dr Aafia Siddiqui case but there was no record on who received this amount.
The committee met under its chairman Senator Talha Mehmood at the Parliament House on Tuesday.
Legal experts told the committee that it was not possible to reach any direct agreement with United States (US) because it avoids entering into bilateral treaties with any country on the matter of prisoners.
For Pakistan, the only means to bring back Aafia is to become member of international treaties on repatriation of prisoners and exercise pressure on US through these pacts, said legal experts.
The committee chairman said former Pakistani ambassador to US Hussain Haqqani issued Pakistani visas to thousands of Americans. Information reveals several Americans were allowed to enter the country without visas and the PPP-led government was fully involved in it, he said. He further said Haqqani is wanted by Pakistani courts because he breached relevant rules and regulations while issuing visas to Americans.
He said ministry of foreign affairs officials issued visas to thousands of Americans including CIA and Black Water agents in violation of visa norms due to which Pakistan is facing a law and order situation.
The committee took serious notice of the pitiable plight of Pakistani prisoners in other countries and voiced concern over non-initiation of any proper steps by the foreign office on this account.
The committee directed the interior ministry to provide details of Pakistani prisoners in foreign countries, nature of their offence and term of imprisonments, within fifteen days.
The committee took notice of the absence of officers from ministry of foreign affairs from the meeting and said the foreign ministry should take necessary steps for repatriation of Pakistani prisoners from other countries.
The committee chairman said he would investigate the absence of officials and the committee would move a motion against those who remained absent from the meeting without excuse.
