A school bus collided with a truck laden with bricks in northern India on Monday, killing 12 children and their driver.

According to Jalandar police, the accident occurred when children were on their way to school on the outskirts of Jalandhar. One officer told that seven children and the bus driver died on the spot and another five children succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.

Police are looking for the truck driver, who fled after the accident.

India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed every year on them. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
