The power supply to almost 85 percent areas in the metropolitan has been restored, according to the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC).
KESC spokesman Aminur Rehman said the power supply was restored to FB area, Malir, SITE, Orangi Town, Shah Faisal Town, Landhi, Korangi and other areas till 9am, while adding that complete restoration of power would take a few more hours.
The power supply was cut off last night due to a major breakdown‚ affecting the entire country. The breakdown reportedly occurred when Tarbela and Mangla power plants tripped suddenly.
Meanwhile, electricity supply had been restored in most parts of the country, including Lahore, Islamabad, Azad Kashmir and Quetta while it was yet to be restored in at least 18 districts of Sindh.
Water and Power Secretary Rai Sikandar had apologised to the nation over the massive power breakdown and had vowed to investigate the electricity fault which plunged the country into deep darkness late on Sunday night.
The KESC spokesman said that production of 5‚800 mega watt electricity had been restored while work was underway to overcome the remaining shortfall.
According to the Ministry of Water and Power‚ a fault in HUBCO power station affected the national grid that as a result had tripped the Tarbela and Mangla power stations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf summoned officials of the Ministry of Water and Power and power generation companies for a briefing in the Prime Minster House on Monday.
