Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Sunday said democracy was the best system of government in the world and was a guarantee to a nation’s progress.

Addressing a seminar on ‚ the information minister said states were run on principles and not by force.

Kaira said the caretaker setup would be formed within the provisions of the constitution.

“Unfortunately, instead of strengthening the democratic culture‚ the culture of changing loyalties is being promoted.”

He said the PPP had always respected the judiciary despite the fact that every time the PPP came into power‚ cases were registered against it and an elected prime minister was sent home.

He said it was only democracy wherein politicians were accountable to people. He said politicians were not only being criticised but they were being humiliated and ridiculed.

Kaira said the real threat to democracy was extremism‚ “no matter whether it is 1979 or 2001, war is imposed in the name of extremism and terrorism”.

He said radical changes took time, adding that the situation would not change in four or five years.

Kaira said the PPP government had restored the constitution‚ handed over powers to parliament‚ empowered provinces and provided them additional resources of almost Rs 11 billion through the NFC. However‚ “we cannot completely eradicate terrorism”.

He said the media should play its role to pave way for “change” as in a democratic system, true accountability took place through votes.

“Without an iota of doubt, the elections will take place on time.”

  1. Can the Information minister name one progress that this country has made in the last five years under this so-called democracy? The only progress that has been made so far is in the area of sectarian violance which has increased by many folds.
