A Pakistani national, acquitted in a case of possessing fake Indian currency has moved the Bombay High Court after serving a sentence for 30 months in prison; challenging the decision of authorities to deny her permission to return to her country.
Rashida Tinwalla, who came to India in December 2009 claiming to be “penniless”, was a divorcee and her three children now stay with her parents in Karachi. In Mumbai, she lives on staircases of buildings, her lawyer Sham Keshwani said.
Rashida’s lawyer stated that the authorities had wrongfully disallowed her to leave India unless she paid a fine of Rs 400,000/- slapped on her in a Customs case for smuggling fake currency.
Her petition came up for hearing yesterday before a bench headed by Justice Abhay Oka, who asked the Union government to file a reply within three weeks.
