KARACHI – The City District Government Karachi (CDGK), which has previously completed various development projects in the metropolis spanning over eight years, is about to start maintenance work of the city’s infrastructure, sources have informed Pakistan Today.
Various committees working under 50 executive engineers (XENs) of the Works and Services Department (W&SD) are conducting survey of main corridors, flyovers, underpasses and other roads to prepare a list for maintenance work to be carried out so that the roads could be repaired and patched without delay.
These committees have been formed by 11 W&SD chief engineers under the directives of Karachi District Coordination Officer Muhammad Hussain Syed. While addressing a W&SD meeting earlier, the DCO expressed displeasure over the working style of the engineers. He ordered disciplinary action against all engineers who do not take action for the repair and maintenance of roads, flyovers and bridges.
The DCO said that avoiding these works would not only adversely affect the beauty of the city, but also create trouble for the citizens. The meeting also took notice of indifference showed by the chief engineers concerned, despite issuance of repeated reminders. The DCO said that besides chief engineers, action would also be taken against superintendent engineers and XENs if they do not respond to the directives.
On the directives of the DCO, the chief engineers have formed different committees, headed by officers of XEN level, in their respective zone to submit reports to the W&SD executive district officer (EDO) after conducting thorough survey of their area within the next 15 days. All repair and maintenance works would be carried out on preferential basis.
