Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti survived a suicide attack near Mardan city on Friday afternoon.

Accompanied by high-ranking civil and police officers, Hoti was going to Mardan to address a public meeting arranged by the Awami National Party. However, despite the failed attempt on his life, the chief minister proceeded to address the well-attended public gathering at Peerano Daag in the heart of the city.

A police official said that a suicide member holding a hand grenade tried to get close to the CM’s vehicle when his convoy reached near Khan Abdul Wali Khan University. However, due to rain, the suicide bomber slipped and fell on the ground. The official said that after falling on the ground, explosives packed with his body went off and a blast occurred.

According to another version, policemen present on both sides of the road opened fire at the suicide bomber when he tried to get close to the vehicles in the CM’s convoy. The suicide bomber, when hit with bullets, blew up.

According to another official, the attacker threw the grenade at the chief minister’s car before blowing himself up.

The attack on the chief minister comes a day after the ANP organised an All Parties Conference (APC) which agreed to begin talks with the Taliban.

A large contingent of police arrived at the site of the blast, and investigations are underway.
