Different ministries have recovered embezzled money worth Rs 19.5 billion from various subordinate departments from May to December 2012, on instructions of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
A PAC meeting was held at the parliament house on Wednesday. Committee Chairman Nadim Afzal Chan presided over the meeting in which the additional auditor general presented the PAC’s performance report for the fiscal year 2006-08. The chairman also gave directions for its publication.
The chairman committee said many government functionaries had mended their methods and adopted legal ways and means under the PAC’s directions, due to which their performance had improved.
“I wanted this meeting’s proceedings to be broadcast live so people could see how the PAC functioned, and could help expose corruption as well,” He said.
He said a separate website for the PAC would be prepared within a week so that matters pertaining to proceedings, recommendations and directions of each meeting could be made available.
The committee directed the Ministry of Railways to include strict rules and regulations in contracts regarding privatisation of trains, so no private party could skive off its job after becoming bankrupt. The committee also instructed the ministry to take immediate measures for recovery from contractors who were liable to ply business trains between Lahore and Karachi.
