The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has asked government to provide security to Kashmir’s first all-girls rock band.

Mehbooba talking to reporters on the sidelines of a party workers convention in Achabal area that “the immense talent of these young girls should not go waste. The onus lies on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He should take the responsibility and make sure that the fringe elements responsible for creating problems for these young girls are dealt with strictly. The government should provide security to the all girls band,”

Terming Kashmiri society as a ‘very tolerant’, she said that “Kashmir has a history of producing wonderful female Sufi singers, which in itself is proof enough of our tolerance and progressive mindset. A handful of regressive elements in the society should not be allowed to hijack the show. Let us not forget that we have produced Padma Shree Awardee Shameema Azad and the likes of Raj Begum,”.

She, however, refused to comment on the fatwa issued by Kashmir’s Grand Mufti Basheer-ud-din Ahmad, adding that “these are religious matters and I don’t know the context in which the fatwa has been issued. So I will better not comment on that,”.

The Grand Mufti had issued a fatwa against the girls stating that “Girls and womenfolk can change the outlook of the society. But when girls indulge in indecency, immorality and are chained in the clutches of music and singing, it is unfortunate for the society.”

He had said that music is not good for society and they (the girls) should inculcate “better values” in themselves.
