A petition was accepted by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday for a hearing against the formation of a new province in Punjab.
Counsel of the petitioner, Azhar Siddique, told the Lahore High Court that the commission formed by the National Assembly Speaker for the creation of a new province was unconstitutional.
He told the court that the commission had no authority to decide whether or not to form a new province, and only the people of Punjab had the mandate to take any decision in this regard.
The petitioner asked the court to declare the commission illegal, and issue a stay order against the creation of a new province.
Meanwhile, another petition had been filed in the LHC against the inclusion of Bhakkar and Mianwali in the proposed province of ‘Bahawalpur-Southern Punjab’.
The Parliamentary Commission on New Provinces was made a party to the case.
