A policeman was killed when unidentified assailants attacked volunteers of a polio vaccination team in Miandheri village of Swabi district on Tuesday.
Officials said unidentified men attacked the volunteers of a polio vaccination team by opening fire on the police constable guarding the team. They also snatched the Klashnikov rifle of the policeman before fleeing.
The volunteers rushed inside a nearby home for safety and escaped the attack unhurt.
Soon after the attack, the polio vaccination drive was put on hold in Swabi district. District Health Officer Dr Zafeer said a strategy was being framed for protection of volunteers who were engaged in the vaccination drive, adding that the administration agreed to provide two policemen for security of each vaccination team.
The vaccination drive will resume on Thursday.
