The Motorway Police has been making vigorous efforts to reduce the rate of accidents to its lowest level yet, by maintaining better discipline on roads through briefing, road safety awareness sessions and constructive enforcement. This was said by Motorway Police Sector Commander Farooq Azam, during a meeting with Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Zafar Bakhtawari on Monday. Azam said special refresher courses had been designed for professional drivers to enhance their status in society and enable them to appreciate their responsibilities. He said driver’s training schools should be encouraged to create good traffic discipline on roads. Azam said that awareness among commercial vehicle drivers and other motorists was necessary to ensure safety of life on these roads. He said many accidents could be avoided if motorists drove vehicles carefully and followed traffic rules. Dozing at the wheel was a major reason for deadly accidents on highways and motorways, he added. He said most vehicles were not fit for driving and the existing system of checking vehicles for fitness was not compatible with international standards. Azam appreciated the private sector’s role for the development of the economy and said that Chambers could play major role in economic transformation of the country. Speaking on the occasion, President ICCI Zafar Bakhtawari lauded the dynamic role played by the Motorway Police in its services towards nation. He said the Motorway Police was an exemplary institution that was free of corruption and presented a culture of assistance for the road users in distress.
