Famous singer Mehnaz Begum, who died in Bahrain on Saturday, was laid to rest in Karachi on Monday. Her funeral prayers were offered after Zohar in Khairul Amal Masjid at Ancholi area. She was buried in Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard near Karachi Super Highway. The well-known playback singer breathed her last on Saturday after protracted illness. She was being shifted to the United States from Bahrain for treatment when her condition worsened. Born in 1958 in Karachi, Mehnaz Begum sung a variety of genres but specialized in ghazal, thumri, dadra, khayal, drupad and reciting salam, noha and marsiya. She was the daughter of celebrated sub-continental singer Kajjan Begum. Mehnaz Begum’s body arrived on Monday two days after her death. She sang over 2,500 songs for radio‚ television, and films in a variety of genres like ghazal, thumri, dadra, khayal, and drupad. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf termed her death a national loss.
