President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday said elections would be held on time per the constitution and no delay in polls would be allowed even for a day.
“Those seeking to postpone elections have been frustrated. No one will be allowed to derail the election process on any pretext,” the president said.
The president felicitated both the coalition partners and opposition on successful resolution of the sit-in in the federal capital.
President Zardari observed that Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, the coalition parties in the government, all opposition political parties and the democratic elements in the civil society and media played positive and constructive role in ensuring a peaceful and successful resolution of the sit-in at Islamabad.
He said peaceful resolution of the issue without the use of force was a triumph of democracy and reconciliation. “It is a vindication of the policy of reconciliation of Benazir Bhutto that has been vigorously pursued by the present democratic government,” he said.
“Democracy and reconciliation have won. The unity shown by democratic political forces in safeguarding democracy is most laudable that needs to be preserved and strengthened,” Zardari said.
He complimented the Interior Ministry and law enforcement agencies under it for aptly handling the situation in maintaining law and order and keeping the demonstrators safe from security threats.
The president also congratulated all those involved in negotiations for their skill and perseverance in successfully concluding negotiations.
